The biggest mistake is copying a technique without understanding the site.
Common examples:
- building swales where drainage is needed
- planting a food forest before handling access, water, and maintenance
- choosing species for ideology rather than suitability
- overcomplicating design before learning the site
- importing lots of materials without building local fertility
- trying to do everything at once
- confusing aesthetics with function
Permaculture is supposed to improve fit between people, place, and systems. If a design move creates more maintenance, confusion, or fragility than it solves, something has gone wrong.
A better mindset is:
**observe first, intervene modestly, learn quickly, and expand what actually works.**
